Patch Blade Belt Knife

Custom walnut handle. This unique Russell Green River patch blade speaks for itself. Heavy gauge high carbon steel with full tang construction and an edge that is hand-ground and hand-honed. 

The little Patch blade from Russell is a true nod to history, back to the day of muzzle loading rifles. In these days every rifleman had his own Patch knife which had an easy but important role. The knives were used to cut swabs of cloth or leather to wrap around the rifle ball to get a tight fit to the barrel. These little blades offer great precision and force when using the tip. The thin blade easily slices through 2,5mm thick leather so it could even be used for leather working. There is a lot to like about this little utilitarian knife blade.

All Russell knife blades are relatively thin making them great slicers. The hardness is kept at a moderate HRC 54-56, which is intentionally low. It used to be important that the blade could be sharpened on any natural stone, and a softer tempering makes honing easy still today.
